Cake plus ice cream equals pure bliss, which is no secret, but the way Broad Ripple’s new dessert bar Smallcakes puts the two together is driving people crazy with desire.
The shop’s signature Smallcakes Smash has been blowing up Instagram since the place opened Sept. 30 at 930 Broad Ripple Ave.
The part sundae, part ice cream sandwich mashup is simple. Two scoops of ice cream, plus whipped cream, go between the bottom and top of a frosted cupcake inside a jar painted on the outside with whipped cream and sprinkles.
Flavor combinations are up to you. The Smallcakes chain, which operates another location in Greenwood, 1279 N. Emerson Ave., makes and serves 18 cupcake flavors, including gluten-free versions, and nearly as many ice cream flavors daily.
When I popped in, local owner Aaron Evans, who runs the shop with his wife, Megan Evans, was building Smallcakes Smashes combining double chocolate cupcakes with s’mores ice cream and Bavarian cream-filled chocolate eclair cupcakes with cookie dough ice cream.
Smallcakes Smashes cost $8 each. The shop also sells milkshakes, individual cupcakes and ice cream in cups and cones and by the pint. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Since opening the first Smallcakes in 2008 in Kansas City, company founder Jeff Martin has competed on two seasons of Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” In 2012, USA TODAY listed Smallcakes as one of America’s top 10 cupcake places.
